Ancient Greece celebrated the importance
of “The Mother” and honoured her as the
giver and protector of life….well before it
became popular in the Christian
calendar…
Gaia (Mother Earth) is the personification
of nature and worshipped as the ultimate
deity and is portrayed as the ancestral
mother of all life. Her daughter Rhea
replaced her as an icon of worship and
she was known as “The Mother of Gods”
and their was an annual spring festival in
her honour as the Goddess of nature and
fertility. Crete was at the centre of this
worship and Mount Ida was said to be the
birthplace of Zeus, it is also reported that
there was a “House of Rhea” in Knossos.
