Ancient Greece celebrated the
importance of “The Mother” and
honoured her as the giver and protector
of life….well before it became popular
in the Christian calendar…
Gaia (Mother Earth) is the
personification of nature and
worshipped as the ultimate deity and is
portrayed as the ancestral mother of all
life. Her daughter Rhea replaced her as
an icon of worship and she was
known as “The Mother of Gods” and
their was an annual spring festival in
her honour as the Goddess of
nature and fertility. Crete was at the
centre of this worship and Mount Ida
was said to be the birthplace of
Zeus, it is also reported that there
was a “House of Rhea” in Knossos.

took place yesterday at Virgin Mary of Vigliotissa
Voulismeni, in the presence of a large crowd.
In the morning a Divine Liturgy and prayer for all mothers
was held in the historic chapel of Panagia, by the priest of
Voulismeni p. Ioannis Lioudakis
The ceremony was followed by laying wreaths on the bust
of Mana by the President of the Educational Cultural
Association of Voulismeni, Dimitris Angelakis, as well as
students of the 2nd Elementary School of Neapolis.
Students then recited poems dedicated to mothers while
distributing roses to everyone, young and old, courtesy of
the Club, as well as the traditional treat.
Happy Mother's Day to all Moms!!! K. P.”
